Unit 4

III. Asking for directions (part 2)

Practice the following dialogues after the pattern. Then practice the dialogues with different place names and transportation vehicle names with the help of the vocabulary given after the dialogues.

1.

  1. Elnézést, merre van a kínai piac?
A kínai piac?... Hm. Nem tudom.

'Excuse me, where is the Chinese market?'
'The Chinese market?... Hm. I don't know.'

Note: "Merre" means "which direction." "Hol" means "where."

a posta, az amerikai követség, a West End, a Duna Plaza, a Nemzeti Múzeum, az Operaház, a Parlament

West End : One of the largest and most popular malls, close to the Western Railway Station.

Duna Plaza : One of the largest and most popular malls, in the northern part of Pest .

Nemzeti Múzeum [ National Museum ]: The museum exhibiting on the political history of Hungary . It is in the downtown area.

Operaház [Opera-house]: One of the most impressive buildings in Budapest . It opened in 1884 and is still used as a concert hall.

Parlament [Parliament]: The house of the Hungarian parliament. It was built for that purpose and still seats the Hungarian parliament. It was built between 1884 and 1904. Located on the Danube bank and often shown on picture postcards, it gives Budapest its characteristic look.

  2. Elnézést, merre van a kínai piac?

A 9-es busszal kell menni. Ott van a megálló. Azt hiszem, nyolc megálló.

    Köszönöm.

'Excuse me. Where is the Chinese market?'

'You need to go with bus 9. There is the stop. I think it's eight stops.'

    'Thank you.'

    "Kell"

"Kell" is a very useful auxiliary verb. We do not conjugate it. It literally means "it is necessary". It is used with the infinitive of the verb that denotes the action that is necessary to perform. For example: "menni kell" means "it is necassary to go." In the example above the sentence "A 9-es busszal kell menni" means that it is necessary to go with bus 9 (in order to get to the destination place).

    "Kell" and word order

Whatever is emphasized gets right in front of "kell." In the sentence in the dialogue the new information (what is emphasized), is "with bus 9," thus that is the phrase that gets in front of "kell" and the rest of the sentence ("menni") goes after "kell."

If we want to make it clear to whom it is necessary to do something (who needs to do something), we attach the appropriate possessive ending after the infinitive and, if necessary, put the noun/pronoun (referring to the person to whom it is necessary to do action) in the dative (more about the dative in a later unit). E.g. "Mennem kell" or with the dative: "Nekem mennem kell."

    Practice:

    1. Practice the dialogues with the following words.

    az amerikai követség - 5-ös busz - 3 megálló
    a Posta - 7-es busz - 4 megálló
    a West End - 91-es busz - 1 megálló
    a Duna Plaza - 43-as busz - 7 megálló
    a Nemzeti Múzeum - 9-es busz - 2 megálló
    az Operaház - 4-es busz - 6 megálló
    a Parlament - 5-ös busz - 2 megálló

    2. Listen to the directions. Which bus do you need to take? For how many stops?

  1. Elnézést. Hol kell leszállni a kínai piachoz?

    Majd szólok. ... [Kínai piac]

'Excuse me. Where do I need to get off to the Chinese market?'
    'I'll let you know.'

. Locative suffix: "hoz," "hez," "höz."

In Hungarian we use endings when English uses prepositions. The locative endings (suffixes) "hoz," "hez," "höz" are three forms of the same ending; they are attached to words according to the rules of vowel harmony ("hez" is attached to high-pitched words, "hoz" is attached to low-pitched words, "höz" is attached to words where the last vowel is a rounded vowel). "Hoz," "hez," "höz" mean "to" or "toward." We use this ending, however, only when we conceptualize the place as a point which we want to reach. There are place names in Hungarian which are conceptualized as a container or a surface; when one goes to these places (and does not only reach them but enters them) we use a different ending (e.g. in the expression of "going to school" "school" gets the ending "ba," which means "into"). Depending on how the place is conceptualized (point, container, surface) the endings for directions of movement (to, at, from) will be different (altogether that means there will be three times three, that is, nine endings for directions of movement).

    -hozfds, -hez, -höz
    to, toward

  2. Vowel harmony rule:

"Hoz": after low-pitched (back vowel) words. If the last letter in the word is "a" or "e" they get an accent (a --> á, e --> é). E.g. if the word is "posta" the word with the ending will be "postához"
"Hez": after high-pitched words (front vowel) words. If the last letter in the word is "a" or "e" they get an accent (a --> á, e --> é). E.g. if the word is "posta" the word with the ending will be "postához"
"Höz": after words where the last vowel is a rounded vowel.
